IN THE WORDS OF THE ARTIST:

I have and continue to inspire myself from walking around. I immerse myself in the dynamic layering and juxtaposition of structure, movement, rhythm, speed, pace, hustle and bustle of various environments. I describe my paintings/drawings as a reactive and visual reiteration of my experience which then transmutes itself onto the canvas/paper as an imagined reality.

The Flamenco Dancer series came into being during a period in 1998, when I loved Flamenco and would go Salsa dancing every weekend after a day often spent navigating the intense throng of London’s West end. The two experiences combine to create a vibrant, bionic monument with vague referrals to the human body.

Paintings/drawings from 1999-2002 with their austere often more formal, linear, grid-like façade which repress complex thinly rendered, elusive, background washes; tangentially allude to technology-based mediums such as computer-graphics and architecture in their own right.

Recent works in 2003 have developed more fluid, at times frought as well as lyrical references, with a greater sense of dialogue between figure and ground. I will in due course develop this language which already begins to seem potentially explosive. This current body of work is more blatantly expressive and shows (arguably) a greater affinity with my earlier ‘Flamenco-like’ visuals. The grids as well as the complex thinly rendered paint washes though more inperceptible suggest that my past habit of ‘holding back’ more and more as the years go by has not been entirely relinquished. I now feel that I have become more at peace with myself and can therefore afford to expose more.
