Biography:
| Jonh Edwards was born in London in 1938. Edwards is one of the UK's more senior artists in the abstract tradition. Alongside a distinguished career as a lecturer, culminating in his appointment in 1986 as Head of Painting and Sculpture at St Martin's School of Art in London, he has also lectured widely in the US, notably at Syracuse University and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. As well as continuing to paint and make prints, he has for the last ten years concentrated on bringing painterly qualities, and in particular colour, to sculpture. |

Comments:
| Whether in making a sculpture, a painting or a print, John Edwards harnesses a lifelong fascination with the forms, colour and processes of making art with a desire to express feelings associated with visual or recalled experience. He describes the recollection through art of remembered experience as being by far the richest means of expression he can imagine and, in common with other seriously committed artists, the activity of making art has been for him a profoundly absorbing matter from his earliest childhood and has continued alongside and beyond a distinguished academic career. |

Artwork Comments:
| John Edwards is a senior British artist in the abstract tradition. Edwards' works can be found in some of the worlds most important contemporary art collections, among these the Gugenheim Museum, New York and the European Parliament. In his own words: As a practising painter, I seek to define the role of colour in painting and sculpture. Using my painterly experience to explore the gesture in order to achieve, brush strokes in actual space. I use colour to express my inner feelings, thereby creating emblems of this continual process, ranging from passion to serenity. |
