| José Luis Alvarez Vélez was born in Vitoria, Basque Country, Spain, in 1949. |

Education:
|
| In 1965 he entered the School of Arts in Vitoria, where he studied Ornamentation and Shape with Basterra Padre as a teacher. He also studied sculpture and was a pupil of Victor Aramburu and Aurelio Rivas. Later he trained as a skilled worker and became part of the Imosa club. During this period, José Luis continued to win prizes for painting, fitting and open-air painting. His successes in this area led him to dedicate himself almost exclusively to Plastic Expression. He currently continues to concentrate on the exploration of this media. |

Honour:

| José Luis has also received a great number of honours, prizes and grants, including First Prize for the Gran Premier competition of Basque painting, the Esmaltes Mention of Honour, and an award from the Juan March Foundation in Venice. |

| Alvares is as talented a figurative painter as he is in his abstract. He reproduces nature, children and objects of all kinds with photographic realism. His abstract works show equal technical brilliance in evoking sensations of color and movement. |
