SUMMARY OF ARTIST STATEMENT: Based in the West of England, and with a passionate interest in landscape, Russell absorbs the vigorous environment of the coasts and moorlands of Devon and Cornwall. His paintings reflect his highly personal and refined vision, utilising dynamic line and colour he is able to synthesise the many elements of a place. He uses layering techniques to build up complex surface levels, which retain detail and clarity, reflecting the energy of each image. A keen jazz guitarist, Russell finds that listening to music playing in the studio sets the mood for many of his paintings; thus critical reflection, absorption and observation, allied to the physical act of painting, permit the development of the symbolic forms and stylistic elements which provide a visual vocabulary for his works. |
