| Bangkok, 1969 – Thai EMERGING artist Sudjai Chaiyapan´s art is influenced by SURREALISM. Trained at the Silapakorn University, Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic art, his work often depicts bodies surrounded by trees or dead organisms, which together with the colour tones, provokes a contemplative feeling with the viewers. This is intentional in order to focus the attention of viewers on environmental degradation and issues. Sudjai also uses erotic elements, though they are often also related to his concern for the environment. In addition to brush, he uses a knife to produce very fine lines which creates the unique style of the Life and Imagination series. In 1997, Sudjai won the Philip Morris ASEAN art award in Thailand. He also won a prize from Mitsubishi Electric for artwork related to environmental awareness. Sudjai participated in the Osaka Triennial in Japan in 1996 and has staged several shows in Thailand as well as abroad. |
