Artist Profile:
Name:
Gianni Villa

Biography:
Mr. Gianni Villa is born 65 years ago near Milan. He is the first of six sons. A few years before the Second World War, his father, Mr. Angelo Villa, established a successful furniture factory.

Unfortunately Mr Angelo died when Gianni was only twenty years old. Since Gianni was the lonly male son, and also the elder, he unwilling had to leave school (he was planning to study architecture), and he began working in his fatherÂ’s factory. He early discovered that, even if he could not attend university, he was very talented in designing interior spaces, which he often enhanced with self-made and very singular sculptures-furnitures.

He began producing these sculptures only for his own pleasure and amusement, or as unusual gifts for his family and for his friends.

He was always looking for new ideas and experimenting new materials, and his creations were produced according to his mood and to his own experiences.

He started producing very different kind of works, depending on his needs (a new home, a new office) or on family events like an anniversary, a wedding, or a birth. Furniture, paintings, gifts, gift-boxes, gadgets, singular greeting cards, were all made in natural materials (wood, stones), painted with aniline and then burnt with fire to make the colours brighter.

During his frequent worldwide travels, Gianni got in touch with lots of foreign cultures; he was mainly interested in African and Asian native culture, especially in their art and in their use of ornaments.

Also he was fond of Japanese gardens, and of their talent in getting beauty out of asymmetry, which is much more difficult then simple and classical symmetry. He started decorating his works with little mirrors, colored glasses, little minerals, sand, golden and silver leaves, copper nails, shellac, wax and many other decorations, experimenting everything he could find around him.

Year after year, his work in the furniture factory allowed him to make new experiments with his art - even if in the beginning he did not thought it was art. To him it was simply a singular way of modifying interior spaces, and enjoying himself and other people. As we told above, for many years his artwork was limited only to his family and to his friends, since he thought about his work as a part of himself, and he did not want foreign people to enjoy it without his permission.

Then he was asked by some important clients (owners of leisure structures like cinemas and restaurants) to design collective spaces to make them more pleasant, and he gradually accepted the idea that also unknown people could take pleasure from his works. He began producing many kind of furniture-artwork, enjoyed by a lot of his clients. Suddenly, due to a sad family event, for two years he was unable to make any artwork. He also left his job in the furniture factory and sold his share to the company, spending his time on the mountains, to get in touch with nature and to find peace in his heart.

Gradually he realized that painting and creating artworks could help him getting out of the blue, and decided to test his talent working only for his art.

He began creating a big amount of pieces, that were to him a way to clear up his mind and to point out the most important experiences in his life.

He also started thinking about his compositions as living-artwork, it means - according to his own words - “like a pet” that follows you with his eyes and says you “welcome” when you come home.

“The artwork should make you smile and make you happy to see it. It must make you feel home, and bring joy in your heart and mind”.

He believes that his compositions can help people feeling better with themselves.
