| Greek-born American sculptor and painter , best known for her work in LIGHT ART. She studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (1953–4) and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (1954–5). Her first works were paintings and metal reliefs, such as the Cycladic Book series, 1955–6, depicting Japanese calligraphy and letters from the Roman alphabet, along with other images, such as arrows, as signs of human communication. Her work, THE GATES TO TIME SQUARE ( Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo ) is regarded as one of the most important American sculptures, of all time. |
